27 Georgia Firms Honored for Breaking Into New Export Markets

MAY 18, 2023 | TREVOR WILLIAMS | globalatlanta.com

Twenty-seven Georgia companies were honored this week with an annual recognition for their expansion of export sales into new markets over the previous year.

While some were seasoned exporters that simply found buyers for their goods or services in one additional new country, at least three of the firms sold internationally for the first time ever in 2022.

The Georgia Department of Economic Development doled out the GLOBE Awards — Georgians Leveraging Opportunities By Exporting — to the greatest number of firms in any year since the pandemic, with the total coming closer to that of years soon after the program was established in 2014.

Many of the honorees were export experts continuing years-long streaks taking home GLOBE awards, which skew heavily toward small businesses. Some 85 percent of the winners had fewer than 100 total employees, and more than half had fewer than 20.

Nearly nine out of 10 GLOBE winners were also “customers” of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, many of them taking advantage of free assistance like market research and partner vetting that the state offers through its trade division and its  network of offices in 12 international markets, according to Commissioner Pat Wilson.

“Last year, the state recorded a record-breaking $47 billion in exports, demonstrating the rising global demand for Georgia products,” Mr. Wilson said in a statement.

Collectively, the GLOBE winners averaged cracking into just over two new markets each, with 55 new countries buying their Georgia-produced exports during the year. Canada, South Africa, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates seem to have been particularly strong target markets.

Since inception in 2014, the GLOBE Award has gone to 323 companies across 46 Georgia counties.

The state is still seeking grantees for its Go Global Georgia export grants, a partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration to help companies attend trade shows, translate materials or engage in other activities that support their international sales.

Exporters of the Year were named for companies in the small, medium and large categories:

  • Small company (1-20 employees): ProgenaCare Global in Marietta, Cobb County — a manufacturer of a human keratin matrix for wound care. The company exported for the first time in 2022.
  • Mid-size company (21-100 employees): T Stamp dba Trust Stamp – Atlanta, Fulton County — T Stamp, doing business as (dba) Trust Stamp is a fast-growing data security company that delivers trusted digital identity systems that ensure data privacy and security for consumers and business across industries.
  • Large company (101+ employees): Americo Manufacturing – Acworth — Americo has been exporting floor care products to the world since 1977 and has retained a client portfolio that spans the globe while consistently finding new opportunities for international trade each year.
