Ceremonial Cacao: Growing & Making in Sacred Ways

An Empowering Chocopreneurs Webinar

What makes ceremonial cacao, ceremonial? There is no governing board like in wine, such as the DOCG or AOC. Even single origin is relatively new to cacao and chocolate consumers, and even then, there are disparities.

When it comes to ceremonial cacao, many think of it as a gimmick and state that there is no proof of it. Well, perhaps genocide and the colonization of many indigenous cultures might point to that.

The survival of cacao as a ceremonial drink has relied solely on lineage keepers and oral tradition. The Maya are not the only ones who have worked to preserve these traditions; they vary among different peoples.

Since indigenous tradition has never believed in a monolithic culture, why is the monolithic culture of the West determining what is and what isn't? Many ceremonial cacao brands are merely following trends, while others are not.

Join Marita (one who catches Lightning and keeper of the thunderstone) and Rose Esteva de la Torre as they share ancient traditions and practices surrounding the ceremonial use of cacao. Discover how they have been taught, how they are preserving these traditions, and how they are translating them to a modern world that often fails to appreciate without appropriating the sacred and the indigenous.
